The VA S.A.V.E. Life-Saving Protocol
Equipping families, friends, and community members to recognize warning signs and take immediate action.
S — Signs
Recognize warning signs of suicide risk: withdrawal, hopelessness, expressing burden, or sudden dramatic mood changes.
A — Ask
Ask the question directly and calmly: “Are you thinking about killing yourself?” Asking does not plant the idea.
V — Validate
Validate the veteran’s feelings and experience without judgment or dismissing their pain. Listen with empathy.
E — Expedite
Expedite help immediately. Connect them with the 988 Veterans Crisis Line or accompany them to an emergency medical facility.
Emergency Veteran Grants
Disabled and wounded service members facing utility shutoffs, heating emergencies, or housing eviction can request rapid financial relief through our state department coordinators.
